Mantrap Lodge is a Family Tradition for the Fink Family
My Mother and Dad (Lawrence & Alberta Fink) began visiting Minnesota for a week's vacation in 1939 (+- 1) and the tradition has continued on a yearly basis since then. On the first trip, my sister Anita and I (Rodney) slept on the back seat (one on bench seat, other on makeshift bed over the drive shaft) of a 1936 Chevrolet. My first visit to Mantrap was with my Uncle Clinton Fink as we were fishing on Crow Wing lakes without much luck and switched to Mantrap for the good Crappie fishing -- this would have been sometime in the 50s. We had a small NEPTUNE motor and were low on fuel so we stopped at Mantrap Lodge for fuel and sandwiches. We got the fuel at the base of the stairs leading up to the lodge where some food was served on an "as needed" basis -- as I recall, we had a ham sandwich and beans for our lunch. The next year found my family and my Uncle's family staying on Mantrap Lake, a tradition that still exists. My sister Anita is the oldest of the three kids (Anita, Rodney & Byron) and in recent years the three of us and our extended families have been visiting Mantrap Lodge. This year (2014) 4 of the 5 generations of my parents family stayed in the lodge (my Mother and Father have passed away) so the tradition lives on.
Visiting Mantrap Lodge gives our extended families a chance to see each other which in itself is a treat as we live all over the country and the Minnesota trip is the only chance for most of us to network. We enjoy the many recreational opportunities provided by the Lodge and the unlimited adventures of the area to include The Old Logging Camp, Itasca Park, Paul Bunyan country and Taste of Dorset. Mike, Dianne and Jeff continue to add new opportunities for recreation and the lodge is continually upgraded. The chance to have a rustic experience with the conveniences of home.
